Magnesium imbalances are associated with worse patient outcomes overall, but especially in the critically ill. That notwithstanding, focusing on the more commonly tested total serum magnesium may be insufficient to properly assess and correct dysmagnesemia. This presentation will highlight clinical situations where ionized magnesium testing is beneficial, offering an opportunity to reduce complications and improve outcomes.
